Minecraft Dungeons II Multiplayer Guide

Co-op sits at the heart of Minecraft Dungeons II. The full campaign — from the opening attack on the Squid Coast camp to the endgame in The Sift — can be played alone or with a party of up to four heroes, and there is no separate multiplayer mode to unlock and no content that is solo-only. Every mission, boss and region works the same whether you go in by yourself or with a full group, so the choice is purely about how you want to play.
The four ways to play
Minecraft Dungeons II supports four configurations, and you can switch between them freely:
- Solo — run the entire campaign by yourself, supported by your pet and summonable companions such as the wolf and iron golem.
- Couch co-op — up to four players share one screen. No subscription is required for local play, and there is no split-screen: everyone sees the same view, which fits the isometric camera.
- Online — up to four players team up across the internet, with crossplay connecting all supported Minecraft Dungeons II Platforms in a single party. A player on Steam, a player on PS5 and a player on Switch 2 can share one group with no extra steps.
- Mixed — some players share one console or PC while others join online. A couch host plus a friend playing from home counts as part of the same four-player party.
Because builds are individual, parties work best when the heroes cover different roles. One player leaning into melee, another into ranged, and a third into support makes a natural composition — for example, a teammate planting a war banner or dropping a picnic blanket while others deal damage. Nothing forces this, but the game rewards a group that thinks about coverage.
Finding a party
Two tools connect you with other players. Matchmaking finds people who are looking for a group and pairs you up automatically, which is the fastest way to get a full party when your friends are offline. Party codes go the other direction: an 8-character code lets a specific group connect directly, so you can invite the exact people you want without working through friend lists.
Co-op quality-of-life changes
The sequel removes the two biggest annoyances of the first game's multiplayer. Loot is automatically shared between party members — when gear drops, it is distributed by the game, which ends the scramble of four players racing for the same pickup. And reviving a fallen teammate is faster when more players help: the more heroes who join a revive, the quicker it completes. Group revives are the intended answer to heavy boss pressure, and the mechanic actively rewards the whole team converging on a downed player instead of one person doing it alone.
What carries over per player
Progression is individual. Each hero levels up independently, earns their own enchantment points, and builds their own library of enchantment books at the Enchant Smith in Brave Haven. Gear is personal too: what drops for you is yours to equip, upgrade at the blacksmith, or reroll with echo shards. Playing in a group never holds your own character back, and joining someone else's game does not require matching their progress.
Is online play free?
The game itself charges no subscription for multiplayer. The console platforms, however, require their own memberships for online play: Xbox needs Game Pass Core or Ultimate, PlayStation needs PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo's platforms need Nintendo Switch Online. Playing on PC carries no extra requirement beyond the game itself. Couch co-op on any platform needs no membership at all.
FAQ
Do all four players see their own screen? No — couch co-op shares a single screen with no split-screen mode. The shared view matches the game's isometric camera.
Is crossplay available at launch? Yes. Crossplay is built in from day one across all platforms, with no separate purchase or unlock required.
Does the game have PvP? No PvP mode has been announced. Every multiplayer mode in the game is PvE co-op: heroes fighting mobs together.
Can I play the whole campaign alone? Yes. There is no solo-only content to miss and no multiplayer-only content to be locked out of — the campaign is complete either way.
Do companions help in solo play? Yes. In solo runs you can lean on your pet and summonable companions, and the wolf in particular can hold enemies' attention while you fight or revive.
