FAQ
Why is The Artist such a hard first boss? The prologue strips you of everything — no extra moves, no health upgrades, no unlocked powers — so you face the game's first Resonant armed only with the Aberrant's basic melee. Without a real kit, even a straightforward fight turns brutal, and plenty of players report needing around ten attempts before it clicks.
How do you interrupt The Artist's attacks? Land one hit. A single strike cancels its charge-up animation, so the fight becomes a rhythm of hit, reposition, and hit again.
What do you get for beating The Artist? The story breaks open: you leave the Oldest House for Manhattan, Central exploration begins, fast travel doors are introduced, and your first combat-ability choice unlocks: Barrage, Volatile Anomaly, or Shield.
Who is The Artist in CONTROL Resonant?
The Artist is the first Resonant you fight, waiting at the end of the prologue's Orientation quest — the boss that closes the opening act. Visually it is a being shaped like the top half of a giant head, a "big creepy partial head." It earns its difficulty reputation honestly: you arrive with no moves, no health upgrades, and no powers, and your entire toolkit is the Aberrant's basic melee.
Every attack and its tell
The traffic lights are the key read — check them before you commit to anything:
| Tell | Attack | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic lights point up at the sky | Slam comes down | Move left, right, or backward |
| Traffic lights swing sideways | Swipe attack | Dodge out of the arc |
| Summons close-range weapons | 2–3 swing combo | Back off, let the combo finish, then punish |
| Starts charging up | Big attack | Land one hit to cancel it |
The strategy, condensed
- Stay in melee range. The prologue gives you no ranged option, and you need proximity to interrupt the charge-up.
- One hit, then reposition. A single hit cancels the wind-up — don't get greedy for combos while it charges.
- Respect the summons. When close-range weapons appear, don't be standing there. Punish the recovery window, not the swings.
- Read the lights before committing. Up means leave the landing zone; sideways means leave the arc.
Players commonly report several attempts, which is the fight working as designed. It teaches the dodge-and-punish rhythm the whole game runs on — the combat guide breaks that rhythm down further.
What beating The Artist unlocks
Manhattan opens, starting with Central. Fast travel doors unlock, and the prologue combat-ability choice arrives — Barrage, Volatile Anomaly, or Shield (Polygon's recommendation is Volatile Anomaly). Your next Resonant decisions run through the boss roster, beginning with the Dancer's pick. Plan your route with the zone order guide.
