StatTrak emblem from the Counter-Strike Wiki
The StatTrak™ emblem identifies the item quality.

Tracked statistics

For a supported weapon finish, StatTrak™ records kills credited to the item’s original owner. Teamkills do not increase the count. The counter belongs to the cosmetic item rather than the weapon class as a whole, so using another finish does not add to this item’s record. This distinction matters when choosing a [[loadout]]: the quality changes the item’s history and presentation, not its damage, accuracy, ammunition or role.

StatTrak™ firearms display the count on a small orange digital counter, while supported knives show confirmed kills etched into the blade. The display makes the item’s record visible during inspection, but it does not provide a tactical bonus. A StatTrak™ finish retains the behavior of its underlying Weapon Skin and can also have its own Wear and Pattern Index.

Ownership and counters

Kills are associated with the original owner. If another player holds the item, the weapon counter can cycle through the stored number and the “ERROR” and “UNKNWN USER” messages rather than crediting that player’s eliminations. When an item changes hands, its previous owner’s kill total does not become the new owner’s personal count. This keeps the displayed statistic tied to the owner who built it up.

The inventory and Steam Market identify StatTrak™ items with an orange quality treatment. Listing one on the Steam Market resets its counter to zero; the six-digit weapon display wraps after 999,999 while the inventory retains the actual total. A StatTrak™ Swap Tool can move a counter between eligible StatTrak™ items of the same item class; it changes which item carries the statistic rather than adding new kills. Trade Up Contracts can also use StatTrak™ finishes when the eligible inputs meet the contract’s StatTrak™ requirements. Weapon Cases and eligible Trade Up Contracts are listed as ways to obtain StatTrak™ finishes; contract inputs must all carry StatTrak™.

StatTrak™ Music Kits

StatTrak™ Music Kits record the number of MVP rounds in which their MVP anthem has played. They otherwise serve the same music function as a regular Music Kit. The counter is a collection record for that kit, not a match advantage, and it is separate from the kill counter displayed on a weapon.

CS2 applicability

StatTrak™ remains represented in the CS2 item ecosystem alongside weapon finishes, cases, contracts and Music Kits. Older descriptions sometimes mix in retired acquisition offers, historical events or version-specific inventory behavior; those details are not treated here as current CS2 rules. For the related item systems, see Weapon Cases, Inventory and Weapon Finishes.

StatTrak module display (July 17, 2023)

A July 17, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test update added leading zeroes to the StatTrak module display. This changed how the counter was formatted in the item’s visible module; the note does not describe a change to the tracked statistic or how kills are recorded.

Eligibility and counting rules

StatTrak™ variants are available for eligible weapon finishes and knives. The Wiki’s item rules distinguish a vanilla weapon from a vanilla knife: StatTrak™ variants are not available for vanilla guns, while vanilla knives can have them except for the default knife. On guns, the counter is displayed on an attached module; on knives, confirmed kills are etched into the blade. Teamkills and bot kills do not count. Weapon counters record kills made by the original owner, so another holder sees the display cycle through ERROR and UNKNWN USER rather than continuing that owner’s personal record.

A StatTrak™ Swap Tool exchanges the stored values between two eligible items of the same item class, such as rifle for rifle or SMG for SMG. It also works with StatTrak™ Music Kits. The tool moves the existing count; it does not merge counters or create additional plays or kills. Music Kits count rounds in which their MVP anthem plays, a separate statistic from weapon kills.

The CS2 update of July 29, 2025 fixed various nametag and StatTrak™ positions. This was a visual placement correction. The patch note does not describe a change to eligibility, tracked events, ownership or counter values.
