Overview
Not long after Brencis seized power, whispers began of a group sworn to topple him. At first people simply called them the rebels, but within months the rebels had a new name: the manumits.
Their leader goes by 'Crake', though his real identity is a closely guarded secret — some claim he does not exist at all.
Lacking the numbers and strength to face Brencis in the open, at least for now, they harass him instead: wrecking his supplies, ambushing convoys carrying prisoners or blood transports, and slaying his soldiers — whose ears they slice off and keep as trophies.
