Mavrogheni writes that disgrace drove him to flee his ancestral lands, now held by creatures calling themselves vrakhiri — bloodthirsty monsters out of his aunt's stories, whom neither sword nor sly politics can dislodge.

He needs time and allies, to be found neither in Maragir — where Ambrus slew most of the other nobles and seized dominion over what had been his — so he hides in a forest cave. The letter breaks off there.
