Brencis and the Bible

A Svartrau soldier jails a manumit and demands why he would kill the holy Knyaz Brencis, whom the priests say was named in Scripture; the manumit answers that he was — twice, near the start and near the very close.

The soldier checks and returns outraged: near the start there is only a serpent proffering false gifts to mortals, and near the close a false prophet working false wonders — not a word about Knyaz Brencis anywhere.

The manumit, who had held his breath expecting death for the joke, sighs with relief that he must have misremembered.
