Barbu writes to the High Officers in sorrow: betrayal has nested in his own household — his wife held to the elder faith, concealing a Christian altar in secret, and plotted covertly with one Grozav.

Protesting his ignorance, he presses for both to be investigated — his denunciation born of duty, not malice — and asks that her sentence be fair and speedy.
