Is CONTROL Resonant Out?
Yes — it is out now. The digital version launched September 24, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, while the PS5 Digital Deluxe edition opened 48 hours earlier on September 22. Reviews dropped under a September 18 embargo (tracked on the review hub), and the game has been patched through update 1.4.0, which added New Game++. The physical discs and the Steelbook arrive October 15, 2026.
Is There a Demo or Playtest?
No public one. A few things get mistaken for demos, so it helps to separate them:
- Media preview builds — hands-on builds shown at events like SGF and gamescom, covered by outlets such as IGN, were press-only and never downloadable.
- Gamescom floor demo — event-only, announced July 28, playable by attendees but never public.
- Closed NDA playtests — Remedy runs these through a sign-up page, and everything played under them stays under NDA.
The earliest any member of the public could actually play was September 22 early access (PS5 Digital Deluxe) or the September 24 full launch. There was no open beta and no downloadable demo.
When Do Reviews Land?
The review embargo lifted Friday, September 18, 2026 at 6 AM Pacific / 9 AM Eastern — six days before launch. Remedy announced the embargo itself, and that six-day gap read as a confidence signal: reviewers were being given plenty of time rather than being rushed past launch day. The launch trailer also went out around this window, and full scores are tracked on the review hub.
How Was the Date Announced?
The September 24 date came through three announcement beats:
- The Game Awards, December 2025 — the cinematic announcement trailer revealed the game.
- PlayStation State of Play, early 2026 — the first official gameplay reveal.
- June 2, 2026 — the story trailer locked the September 24 date (the same pattern Remedy used for Alan Wake 2), and most of the official screenshots trace back to this drop.
Milestone table:
| Milestone | Date | Details | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announcement | TGA, Dec 2025 | Cinematic reveal trailer | |
| Gameplay reveal | State of Play, early 2026 | First official gameplay | |
| Release date reveal | June 2, 2026 | Story trailer + Sept 24 date | |
| Gone gold | August 18, 2026 | Launch build finished (see the [[guides/gone-gold | gone-gold page]]) |
| Review embargo | Sept 18, 2026, 6 AM PT | First scores published | |
| Early access | Sept 22, 2026 | PS5 Digital Deluxe, 48h ahead | |
| Digital launch | Sept 24, 2026 | PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PC |
| Physical launch | Oct 15, 2026 | Retail discs + Steelbook (moved from Sept at the gold milestone) |
Was the Release Date Ever Different?
Yes, indirectly. Through late 2025 the community widely expected a launch in the first half of 2026, but Remedy denied the early-date rumors in January 2026 before the September window was locked. Older articles citing a spring 2026 date reflect that corrected timeline rather than a formal delay.
The physical edition did get a real move: it shifted from September 24 to October 15, announced alongside the August 18 gone-gold milestone, because manufacturing needed more time. The digital date never changed.
What Should You Know Now That It's Launched?
Most of the buying windows are closed and the post-launch picture is what matters now:
- The pre-order bonus page is a historical record now, and the NVIDIA RTX 50 bundle purchase window closed September 29, 2026 (codes issued in-window still redeem).
- The Steelbook Edition shelves with the physical launch on October 15.
- PC players should check the system requirements — the SSD footprint is larger than the first Control's.
- New buyers are stepping into a patched game: New Game Plus, a combat rebalance, and a full guide library — best weapons, every boss, and the patch notes — are all waiting. The walkthrough covers the full quest layer for anyone starting fresh.
