Role & availability
The Molotov is part of the grenade loadout and is purchased during a permitted buying period. Its fire deals damage over time to players caught in the flames. The threat makes an opponent leave a strong position or take a different route, which can create room for teammates to advance.
The Molotov is the Terrorist-side fire grenade. Counter-Terrorists have the Incendiary Grenade, which serves a related area-denial role. Both belong to the broader CS2 utility system, but their side availability and presentation are distinct.
Fire & space control
After impact, flames spread across the nearby ground according to the surface and surrounding geometry. A player can be damaged while standing in the fire, so staying in the area to hold an angle has a real cost. The spread can block a narrow passage, force a defender away from cover or interrupt a push through a choke point.
Fire is temporary and can be extinguished by a Smoke Grenade. This interaction gives the opposing team a response: a smoke can open a route through flames, though throwing it also consumes utility and can obscure vision. The fire and smoke interaction makes timing important for both sides.
When teams use it
Attackers may throw a Molotov at a common defensive position before entering a site, reducing the number of safe places an opponent can occupy. Defenders may use it to slow a rush or make attackers wait while teammates rotate. In either case, communicate where the flames will land so allies do not run into the area or assume that a blocked route is clear.
A Molotov can complement a smoke that blocks a distant sightline or a Flashbang that supports a peek. It does not replace checking corners: an opponent may move before the flames arrive or hold a different angle. Consider the remaining round time and objective before spending the grenade.
CS2 applicability
This entry covers the CS2 Molotov and its relationship with the Counter-Terrorist Incendiary Grenade. It does not combine item rules from earlier Counter-Strike versions. Exact price, duration and update changes require a dated CS2 rules record.
September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update
The September 27, 2023 release changed Molotov fire so it floats above water. Fire can therefore remain visually and functionally positioned over a water surface rather than being hidden beneath it. The update does not say that fire spreads across every water area or changes its damage and lifetime. See Smoke Grenade for the counterplay interaction.
Molotov fire effects and first-person event timing (August 1, 2025)
The August 1, 2025 update restored the correct fire particle for the Molotov and adjusted first-person Molotov audio and particle-event timing. These are two presentation corrections: one names the fire effect, while the other aligns sound and particle events as seen or heard from the player’s view. The notes do not describe a change to fire spread, damage, duration, throw behavior or the Molotov’s team availability. This entry keeps those visual and audio fixes separate from the incendiary grenade’s sound correction.
