Assignment, possession and location
One Terrorist receives the C4 at the start of a Bomb Defusal round. The carrier can drop it, and another Terrorist can retrieve it; Counter-Terrorists cannot take a dropped C4 and plant it in ordinary Bomb Defusal play. The match interface identifies the carrier and marks a dropped bomb on the Terrorist HUD or radar. Call the carrier’s death and the item’s location so the team can decide whether to recover it or regroup. If the carrier stays idle too long, CS2 can automatically drop the C4.
The device occupies the active equipment slot while carried. Its movement speed is the same as the knife. Possession does not make the approach safe: the carrier still needs teammates to clear angles or protect the plant. A lost carrier does not permanently remove the objective because another Terrorist can pick up the dropped bomb.
Planting at a bombsite
A Terrorist can plant only inside an enabled bombsite. Select the C4 and hold the plant action for 3.2 seconds. During the animation, the player crouches and cannot cover the approach with a rifle, so teammates need to clear the site or hold its entrances. The opening of a CS2 plant has audible feedback—a radio exclamation, switch sound and electric beeps—so defenders can react before the device is armed.
A planted C4 gives different beep pitches by site: B is slightly lower than A. Once planting finishes, the bomb flashes and beeps, with the beeps growing more urgent as detonation approaches. Plant position also shapes the post-plant: a visible device may let a surviving Terrorist challenge a defuser from cover, while a less exposed plant can give defenders a safer approach. The team should agree who watches each likely entrance.
Fuse, round state and defusing
The listed fuse is 40 seconds under Competitive rules and 45 seconds under Casual rules. After a successful plant, the ordinary round timer is replaced by the C4 objective: Terrorists must deny the defuse until detonation, while Counter-Terrorists must complete a defuse before the fuse ends. Mode matters when estimating whether a retake, escape or defuse can finish in time.
A Counter-Terrorist defuses by holding the interaction on the device. It takes 10 seconds without a Defuse Kit and 5 seconds with one. The kit changes the interaction time, not the C4 fuse. The defuse can be interrupted if the player stops the action or loses focus on the device. A planted C4 remains live even if every Terrorist is eliminated: the Counter-Terrorists still have to defuse it to win the round.
Explosion and map-specific damage
On July 8, 2026, CS2 redesigned C4 damage range and extent across all official defusal maps. Damage now uses precomputed simulation values built into each compiled map. Explosion impact is therefore map- and position-dependent; older single radius or damage tables should not be presented as universal CS2 values. The update did not publish one replacement damage number for every map.
The July 9, 2026 follow-up removed a map-wide minimum of one damage point, fixed incorrect calculations near boundaries between map areas and increased the force applied to dropped weapons. On July 20, the bomb-health preview became visible when the C4 became audible, and the explosion began interacting with smoke grenade clouds and Molotov or Incendiary fire. These dated changes concern damage feedback and nearby effects; they do not alter the 3.2-second plant or the mode-specific fuse.
Presentation and dated changes
The September 27, 2023 CS2 update fixed C4 lights reflecting through walls. February 6, 2024 lowered the B-site planted beep further, and April 1, 2026 added a C4 equip sound. These are separate cues for the carried item, plant location and planted device. Limited Test notes from August 2023 also recorded C4 animation adjustments and fixed dropped bombs sinking in water; those beta-period fixes are historical and should not be confused with current live-game objective rules.
On October 13, 2025, exiting a defuse began lowering the viewmodel weapon, preventing scoping and delaying firing by 150 milliseconds. This adjustment concerns the transition back to weapon use; it does not change the five- or ten-second defuse duration. The later July 2026 damage redesign is a separate map-simulated explosion change, and should be read alongside its July 9 correction and July 20 health-preview and utility-interaction updates.
September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update
A September 27, 2023 launch fix stopped C4 bomb lights from reflecting through walls. The change concerns how the planted objective is rendered through geometry; it does not change the bomb’s timer, defuse rules or the visibility of the actual device around an unobstructed corner.
April 1, 2026 C4 equip sound
The April 1, 2026 `animgraph_2_beta` update added a new sound for equipping the C4 Explosive. The note identifies an audio cue, not a change to bomb possession, planting, detonation, defusal time or objective rules. Its stated scope is the Beta build. See Audio Settings for the rest of the update’s sound-mix changes and Animgraph 2 (Beta) for the version boundary.
C4 planting animation fixes
The April 14, 2026 animgraph_2_beta patch fixed a head-wobbling issue while planting the C4 Explosive. On April 17 it also applied minor polish to turn animations during planting. These entries concern the player animation around the plant action; neither note changes the plant duration, bomb timer or objective rules. Both changes were included when the Beta changes went live on April 20, 2026. See Animgraph 2 (Beta).
Dropped C4 and water
The August 17, 2023 CS2 Limited Test update changed dropped-bomb behavior so the bomb no longer sinks in water. This concerns the dropped C4 object and its visibility or recovery in a water area, not the planted bomb timer, bombsite interaction or defusal rules. The note does not state whether the object floats at the surface or describe a new pickup rule. See Bomb Defusal.
Dropped-bomb water behavior and C4 animation
The August 2, 2023 update listed splash effects when weapons were dropped in water; on August 17 the patch notes explicitly stated that dropped bombs no longer sink in water. The latter concerns the dropped C4 object, not the planted bomb’s timer or defusal rules.
On August 7, the Limited Test notes also recorded various adjustments to the C4 animation. No individual animation or timing change was specified. See Bomb Defusal and the C4 audio and planting updates for separate dated changes.
Disconnect-related C4 correction (June 9, 2023)
The June 9, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test notes say a fix stopped disconnecting players from taking the C4 Explosive with them. The update does not describe the precise disconnect state or the item’s resulting position, so this record does not add a drop rule or describe how the bomb behaves in other disconnect scenarios.
Cancelled plant state cleanup (March 30, 2023)
The March 30, 2023 Limited Test update fixed bomb code so it cleared correctly when a plant was aborted. The note concerns cleanup of the planting state after cancellation; it does not alter plant duration, defuse rules or C4 ownership.
C4 Loadout slot for Name Tag items (September 8, 2023)
The update added a C4 Loadout slot for users who owned C4 items with a Name Tag applied. This created a way to select a named C4 item through the Loadout system; the note does not change who carries the objective in a match or how planting and defusing work. The feature is specifically tied to C4 items bearing a Name Tag, rather than a universal extra equipment slot. See Loadout and Name Tag for the related systems.
Bomb radar visibility fix (April 16, 2024)
The April 16 update fixed a bug where the bomb could sometimes disappear from the radar. This describes a missing radar marker, not the physical C4 disappearing or a change to planting, carrying or defusing. The notes do not identify the conditions that triggered the marker problem.
Equip-sound interruption fix (April 28, 2026)
A CS2 sound fix on April 28, 2026 stopped other equip sounds from interrupting the C4 equip sound in the affected case. This concerns the audible presentation of equipping the objective device; the note does not say that the player equips C4 faster, that the bomb becomes available earlier, or that planting and defusing rules changed.
Dropped-bomb recovery and defuse-cable visibility (April 29–30, 2026)
The April 30 Cache update fixed locations where a dropped bomb could become unreachable. This addresses recovery of the C4 after it falls in particular map geometry; it does not change who can carry the bomb, planting rules or the defuse timer. The same date’s miscellaneous notes fixed defuse cables from completely occluded players being occluded as well. That is a visibility correction to the cable presentation when a player is hidden, not a change to defuse progress or player visibility itself. See Cache for the dated map corrections and Bomb Defusal for the objective rules.
Plant animation and dropped-C4 map fixes (August 2024)
On August 14, 2024, CS2 fixed a case where a player could start the bomb-plant animation outside a bomb site. This is an objective-state presentation correction; the note does not say that planting became possible outside a site or that plant timing changed. On August 21, several maps received fixes for locations where the C4 could become stuck, including Nuke, Mirage, Inferno and Anubis. Those are map-specific dropped-object recovery corrections, not changes to the bomb’s fuse or defuse rules.
