Two sides, one objective

At the start of a Bomb Defusal round, the Terrorists receive the C4 according to the selected mode’s rules. They move toward an enabled bombsite, clear defenders and plant the device. Once it is planted, the Terrorists defend it until detonation while the Counter-Terrorists attempt to reach and defuse it. A planted bomb can win the round even if attackers are eliminated, provided the defenders do not complete a defuse in time.

Counter-Terrorists can win by eliminating all Terrorists before a plant, preventing a plant until the round timer expires or defusing a planted C4. The exact win conditions can include mode-specific exceptions, so the team should understand the queue it selected. This objective differs from Hostage Rescue, where Counter-Terrorists escort hostages rather than defusing a bomb.

Planting & detonation

The C4 can be planted only within an enabled bombsite. The carrier must reach the site and complete the planting interaction, during which they cannot use a rifle to fight. Teammates should clear the immediate area and cover likely approaches. The location of the plant affects which positions can see or contest a defuse.

After the plant, the bomb’s sound and visual signals communicate its state. The remaining time pressures both teams: Terrorists must prevent access, while Counter-Terrorists have to clear the site and interact with the device. A player with a Defuse Kit can complete the defuse faster than a player without one under applicable mode rules. The kit does not clear the site or protect the defuser from attack.

Modes & map layouts

Bomb Defusal appears in Premier and Competitive, and in formats such as Wingman and Retakes with distinct team sizes or scenario setup. Wingman uses smaller maps and fewer players; Retakes begins with a bomb already planted. Casual also has mode-specific equipment rules. Do not carry a rule from one queue into another without checking its format.

Most Bomb Defusal maps provide two marked sites, A and B. Terrorists can use their position, available time and teammate information to decide where to attack. Defenders balance the sites and rotate based on evidence. Map pages such as Dust II, Mirage, Inferno and Nuke describe how routes shape the objective.

Information, utility & post-plant

A useful attack coordinates the bomb carrier with players who can clear the site and trade an entry. Defenders communicate sightings, keep track of the bomb and avoid leaving a site unattended based only on uncertain sound. A Smoke Grenade can obstruct a sightline and a Flashbang can help a teammate enter, but neither confirms a position is safe.

After the plant, assign players to watch the bomb, likely entrances and any route through which Counter-Terrorists may approach. Defenders should call when a defuse begins and avoid peeking one at a time. Read Post-Plant, Rotations and Communication for the team systems connected to the objective.

CS2 applicability

This entry describes CS2 Bomb Defusal and keeps Premier, Competitive, Casual, Wingman and Retakes differences separate. The game mode is distinct from similarly named modes in earlier titles. Exact timers, player counts, money rules and equipment availability belong to the named CS2 queue.

September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update

A launch animation fix corrected a character briefly standing during the crouch-planting animation. The patch addresses the presentation of a player planting the C4 while crouched; it does not change plant duration, interrupt conditions or the bombsite objective.

Third-person bomb-plant animation (April 24, 2026)

The April 24 update adjusted the third-person bomb-plant animation to more closely match the first-person animation. This aligns the two views of the planting action; it does not change the time needed to plant C4, interrupt rules or the bomb objective.
