Mode overview

Players select available maps before joining Competitive matchmaking; this is different from the Premier veto. A match then follows the selected map’s objective. Bomb Defusal maps center on the C4, while Hostage Rescue maps require the Counter-Terrorists to retrieve hostages. Players should know which scenario is active before spending utility or calling the round.

Teams play twelve rounds on each side in CS2 regulation. At halftime the teams switch sides, and a team reaching thirteen round wins wins in regulation. A tie and the applicable overtime or match ending depend on the rules configured for the mode. Old fifteen-round halves are not the current CS2 format.

Map-specific Skill Groups

Competitive Skill Groups are specific to maps. Playing Mirage contributes to the group for Mirage; it does not convert that group into the number displayed in Premier or the rating for another map. This makes rank a record of experience in a particular map’s queue rather than a single mode-independent label.

A player’s group can be hidden after inactivity or after changes that require another result to place the player, under current rules. Visibility, calibration and expiry are version-dependent. Read this system alongside the separate CS Rating and Skill Groups entries.

Playing as a team

Before the buy phase ends, check the team’s money, expected objective and utility. Several players with rifles but no grenades may be less prepared than a coordinated purchase. Discuss whether the round is an Eco Round, a Force Buy or a Full Buy. An organized purchase helps the team play the same timing.

During a round, share confirmed positions and whether the C4 has been seen. A player at a bombsite can ask for support before giving up the position. A teammate rotating should report the path they are taking. A Trading partner can help a player challenge an angle, but following too closely risks both teammates being caught by one grenade.

CS2 applicability

Competitive’s map choice and Skill Groups here refer to CS2. Global Offensive’s ranked and unranked selection, older fifteen-round halves and cross-map rank history are separate historical rules. Current map availability, cooldowns and overtime behavior should be maintained by date.

September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update

Counter-Strike 2 Competitive matchmaking was enabled at retail launch on September 27, 2023. This made the ranked map-selectable queue available in the full release. Its launch availability is distinct from Premier and Wingman: Competitive uses map-specific Skill Groups and match rules described in this entry, while each queue is governed by its own later updates.

12-round halves in the Limited Test

Competitive mode’s match length was adjusted to 12-round halves in the August 15, 2023 Limited Test update. The August 31 patch page carries a note that points back to August 15 as the change date. This is a Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test record, not a statement that every historical Counter-Strike edition used the same half length.

The round count describes the standard half structure; overtime and later CS2 rule changes must be read from their own dated entries. See Round Structure and Premier for related match formats.

Limited Test queue availability

The August 15, 2023 CS2 Limited Test notes state that Competitive matchmaking was currently disabled. This describes the test build at that point in its timeline; it does not mean that Competitive was removed from the retail game. The August 31 update later introduced Premier, and the September 27 retail release had its own queue availability.

The same August 15 note also lists Private Matchmaking as disabled in the Limited Test. Read the dated limitation separately from the mode’s purpose and from later availability. See Private Matchmaking and Counter-Strike 2.

Anubis and Ancient in Competitive

Anubis was added to Competitive in the August 2, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test update, then removed from Competitive on August 7. Ancient was added to Competitive on August 7. These short-lived test-pool decisions are distinct from later retail map rotations and from the maps’ underlying Bomb Defusal rules.

Party matchmaking fix (July 18, 2023)

A July 18, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test update fixed an issue that prevented parties of two or more from entering matchmaking. This is a dated beta defect correction, not a party-size rule or a change to Competitive team composition. Later CS2 matchmaking behavior should be read from the applicable current mode and client.

Nuke added to the Limited Test pool (June 29, 2023)

Nuke entered Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test Competitive matchmaking on June 29, 2023. The same dated map list also put Nuke in Deathmatch and Casual, while Office was added only to Deathmatch and Casual. Mirage was removed from the available Limited Test pool. This historical snapshot does not imply that the retail Competitive pool has the same lineup.

Weapon pickup while dead (March 24, 2023)

The March 24, 2023 update fixed a Limited Test case that let players pick up weapons while dead during a Competitive match. This is an edge-case correction for that match state; it does not alter the normal weapon-pickup rules for living players.
