What a Skill Group represents

A Skill Group is the visible rank attached to results in a ranked CS2 queue. It gives players a compact way to describe their matchmaking standing and helps the system place them in Competitive games. It is an outcome-based classification: the badge does not grant weapon access, change damage, alter movement or provide an in-round advantage. Match outcomes still depend on the teams, map, economy, communication and decisions made during play.

The names run from Silver I through Global Elite in an ordered progression of eighteen groups. The table lists them in that order. A displayed group is a broad label rather than a published numerical rating. CS2 does not expose a universal Competitive point value for each group, so players should not infer an exact hidden score, fixed win count or guaranteed promotion threshold from the badge. The live placement prompt takes precedence over old fixed-count advice.

Competitive groups are tracked by map

In CS2 Competitive, each map has its own Skill Group. A player may be Silver III on Mirage and Master Guardian I on Nuke at the same time. These are separate result histories, not contradictory ratings. Playing one map updates that map’s standing; it does not automatically transfer the same badge to every other map. Check the selected map when determining whether its rank has been earned or needs renewed activity.

A map without an issued group can mean that the player has not completed the placement requirement for that map. Competitive displays how many wins remain for the selected map, and that number may vary; check the live queue interface rather than assuming a universal count. Inactivity can hide a map’s group. Official support guidance says a player whose group becomes hidden this way must win one Competitive match to be reassessed and receive a group again.

Wingman has a separate Skill Group

Wingman is a two-versus-two mode with a smaller map layout and one active bombsite. Its Skill Group progression is separate from the per-map Competitive groups. Wingman results do not issue or directly replace a Competitive map rank, and a high Competitive badge does not mean the Wingman badge must match. The queues use different team sizes and map formats, so their rank records remain distinct.

Competitive is the five-versus-five mode in which players choose from available maps; Wingman is the compact two-player-per-team format. Both use named Skill Groups, while Premier uses CS Rating. Compare each value only in its own queue context.

Placement, visibility and the match interface

The game surfaces a player’s group in the profile and matchmaking flow, including the party lobby and scoreboard at the relevant stage of a match. For Competitive, the selected map determines which map-specific badge applies. Before a group is issued, the interface communicates how many more wins are needed for placement. Use that live count because requirements and presentation can change.

Rank visibility may change without changing round rules. A group can be absent because placement is unfinished or inactivity has hidden it. Official support also notes that a recent party member’s permanent game ban can result in adjusted wins and a changed group. Read a missing or changed badge as matchmaking status, not as proof about one particular match or account level.

How results relate to progression

Skill Groups are recalibrated through results in the queue that owns them. Wins and losses affect the evidence used to assess performance, but CS2 does not publish a simple formula mapping every result to a precise rank change. A streak does not reveal the full rating state. One win does not always promote, one loss does not always demote, and a particular scoreline does not guarantee movement; use the game’s current rank display for placement and visibility.

The group is useful context when selecting a Competitive map, reviewing a match or understanding a party’s ranked history. It does not prescribe a weapon or guarantee that teammates have equal experience. Map knowledge, role familiarity, communication and round decisions remain relevant at every badge. See Competitive, Competitive matchmaking and Map Control.

Skill Groups, CS Rating and Profile Rank

CS2 has several progression displays that answer different questions. Skill Groups are named ranks for Competitive maps and Wingman. CS Rating is Premier’s numerical rating and leaderboard measure; it is not a conversion of the player’s Silver, Nova, Guardian or Eagle badge. Profile Rank is earned through eligible account XP, and the Service Medal connects to that progression. Neither profile level nor medal resets a Competitive or Wingman Skill Group.

When reading a profile, identify the queue, the map if it is Competitive, and the rating system being shown. Premier and Competitive explain the mode differences; Wingman covers its separate compact queue.

Counter-Strike 2 scope

This entry describes CS2 map-specific Competitive groups and separate Wingman progression. Older matchmaking descriptions may refer to one shared Competitive rank or different placement rules; do not silently apply those rules to CS2. If the interface or official support guidance changes, record the affected placement, inactivity or visibility behavior as a dated CS2 rule.

VAC-terminated match and Skill Groups (June 6, 2023)

The June 6, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test notes stated that a match terminated after a VAC live ban would not affect any participant’s Skill Group. The update described this consequence alongside an end-of-round match termination and a specific final-round exception. It does not establish a change to the ordinary Skill Group calculation for completed matches.
