Reach Global General and claim the medal
Profile Rank is the XP-based account progression shown in the player profile. Its highest step is Global General at Rank 40. When the account reaches that rank, the game offers the player the ability to claim the available Service Medal. Claiming it records the medal and resets Profile Rank so the player can begin another progression cycle. Rank progress and the medal are linked, but the medal is a separate profile reward rather than a matchmaking score.
The claim is an account choice made in the game interface. Check that the account has reached Rank 40 and review the current medal before confirming the reset. The medal’s year and level are the permanent record of the progression that was claimed; the player should not treat the reset as a loss of Premier CS Rating or Competitive rank. Profile Rank describes the XP track and how it differs from those competitive systems.
Annual medals and upgrade levels
Service Medals are identified by calendar year. A new annual medal has its own appearance and availability window, while a player’s Profile Rank does not automatically reset merely because the calendar year changes. When a player reaches Rank 40 and claims an eligible medal, further rank progression may be used to upgrade that year’s medal through its available levels. The exact visual level and the current year’s availability should be checked in the CS2 profile interface.
The 2026 Service Medal became available in-game on January 1, 2026. Valve’s December 26, 2025 announcement states that reaching Global General (Rank 40) allows the player to reset Profile Rank and earn or upgrade the 2026 medal. This is a dated example of the annual system, not a promise that future years will use the same design, level count or release date. Older annual medals are separate year-labeled rewards and should not be substituted for the active one.
Prime Status and XP eligibility
Prime Status is required for CS2 XP progression and Service Medal eligibility. A non-Prime player can access core game modes, but does not receive XP from play and therefore cannot advance Profile Rank toward the medal through those matches. If the profile is not progressing, confirm Prime status and inspect the current XP display after the match. Prime Status explains the account entitlement and its other progression benefits.
XP may come from eligible play and active mission systems, but mission availability, bonuses and weekly progression rules can change. The medal itself does not specify one universal number of matches: the time to reach Rank 40 depends on the current XP rules and the player’s activity. Avoid treating older multiplier tables or operation bonuses as current CS2 medal requirements. Weekly Missions and XP Overload cover related XP systems.
Service Medal, Skill Groups and Premier medals
A Service Medal follows Profile Rank progression. Competitive Skill Groups are assigned through Competitive results and are tracked by map; CS Rating belongs to Premier. Claiming a Service Medal resets the profile’s XP rank, not those competitive results. A high-level profile is not a measure of current skill, and a medal does not raise or lower the player’s match rating. See Competitive, CS Rating and Premier.
A Premier season medal is a different reward associated with a Premier season and its participation conditions. It is not upgraded by reaching Profile Rank 40. Likewise, an Operation coin, event coin or weapon item does not replace the annual Service Medal. The year label and the game interface identify which progression system a displayed medal belongs to.
CS2 scope and dated history
The Service Medal system was carried into Counter-Strike 2 with Profile Rank progression. This entry focuses on its current CS2 use and the 2026 annual medal. Older Counter-Strike rules about Prime acquisition, XP multipliers, operations or matchmaking eligibility are not presented as current medal requirements. The Rank 40 reset is the key connection: it lets the player claim or upgrade the year’s medal and begin another profile-level cycle.
Valve announced the 2026 Service Medal on December 26, 2025, with availability beginning January 1, 2026. Dated details for future medals should be added when Valve announces that year’s reward. For the current progression status, use the in-game profile card and the current Patch Archive.
