Mode overview
Each Wingman team has two players and the selected compact layout has one bombsite. Terrorists attack with the C4; Counter-Terrorists protect the site and can defuse a plant. Some layouts reduce a larger map by closing routes or shifting spawns. The reduced space brings fights closer but leaves fewer players to watch the remaining entrances.
Purchases persist across objective rounds, so the pair should agree on weapons, armor and grenades. An isolated early death leaves the survivor with less support. Report an opponent’s location and agree whether to hold, retreat or rotate instead of making separate guesses.
Skill Groups
Wingman has its own Skill Group. It is separate from the CS Rating in Premier and the map-specific groups in Competitive. Placement, display and inactivity details follow CS2’s current ranking rules and can change.
Trading with one teammate requires balancing support distance with spacing. Stay close enough to respond when a partner takes contact, but avoid both players being exposed to one grenade or flash. A two-player advantage still needs to become bombsite control.
Playing the compact layout
Divide responsibility: one player gathers information while the other supports the bomb carrier. Use a flash to let a teammate contest a close angle or a smoke to obscure a defensive sightline. Call the timing so that entry and utility arrive together.
After planting, stay close enough to defend the bomb. On defense, clear the approaches as a pair before one player commits to a defuse. A smoke may obscure the device but cannot establish that an attacker has left the area.
CS2 availability
Wingman is a CS2 mode. Its maps can rotate; a map listed in an old event or earlier playlist is not necessarily in the current selection. Details are kept separate from other editions.
September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update
Wingman matchmaking was enabled in the September 27, 2023 CS2 launch update. This establishes its availability in the retail game; current map pools and availability remain update-dependent. The mode keeps its own smaller-team structure and rating context rather than inheriting Premier or Competitive rules.
Wingman disabled in the Limited Test
Wingman was disabled in the August 2, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test update. This is a dated availability change in the test build and does not mean that Wingman was permanently removed from CS2. The same patch changed which maps were available to Deathmatch, Casual and Competitive.
Later updates restored or expanded test access to maps and modes, and the September retail release has its own mode inventory. See Map Rotations for the date-specific pool history.
Limited Test introduction (July 17, 2023)
The July 17, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 Limited Test update added Wingman. The same build made Overpass selectable in Deathmatch, Casual, Wingman and Competitive, added Vertigo to Deathmatch and Casual, and removed Nuke and Office from the then-current Limited Test selection. These are dated beta map and mode assignments, not permanent statements about later retail CS2 pools.
Wingman’s Limited Test appearance was temporary at first: the August 2, 2023 update disabled the mode. CS2 later enabled Wingman matchmaking at the September 27, 2023 retail release. The sequence distinguishes an early beta addition, its subsequent test-period pause and the public-release mode availability.
