Applying a Name Tag
To rename a weapon, select the Name Tag in the CS2 inventory, choose an eligible weapon and enter the desired text in the preview step. The preview lets the player check how the text will appear before finalizing it. A Name Tag can be used on an owned weapon, including a standard weapon without a finish, and the applied name becomes part of that weapon item’s displayed identity.
Names are limited to 20 characters and use the character set supported by CS2: English letters, digits, spaces and the listed punctuation symbols. A name cannot begin with a space. Other characters may fail to render as intended; the supported preview is the useful check before applying the single-use item. This is an item-name field, not the player’s Steam display name or a chat message.
The engraved nameplate uses a predetermined location on each weapon. Players cannot move the nameplate to a custom point or reposition it as they can adjust supported sticker placements. Its placement is part of the weapon’s presentation and can differ with the weapon model. The Weapon Skins and Stickers entries cover those separate cosmetic systems.
Displayed name and weapon identity
A custom name is shown with quotation styling in supported item displays, including inventory and other weapon panels. The gameplay weapon remains the same item type: its official weapon name still determines how it fires, which loadout slot it uses and how the game identifies it for gameplay. This distinction matters when a player sees a customized name in an inventory or inspect panel and needs to identify the actual weapon.
The name is attached to the weapon item, not to a player’s loadout slot. If that renamed weapon is traded or sold, the customized name remains with the weapon. The next owner can keep the name or remove it through the item’s Rename menu. Applying the Name Tag does not transfer the tag as a separate accessory and does not create a second copy of the weapon.
A Name Tag also does not modify the weapon finish, wear, pattern, StatTrak counter or stickers. Those are separate item properties. Renaming a StatTrak weapon does not erase its recorded count, though the display can prioritize the custom name; removing that name restores the ordinary item naming presentation. See StatTrak and Inventory for the other item properties and management actions.
Changing and removing a custom name
A weapon can be renamed again by applying another Name Tag. The previous custom name is replaced, but a Name Tag already consumed on that weapon cannot be moved to a different item. Players should verify the selected weapon and preview text before applying a tag because the item is single use.
To remove a name, open the weapon’s Rename action in inventory and choose Remove Name. Removing the custom text does not consume another Name Tag, but the original tag is not refunded. The weapon remains in the inventory with its other item properties intact. A player who wants a different name after removal needs another usable Name Tag.
The operation changes the item’s displayed name only. It does not restore a prior owner’s name if one was overwritten, reverse a trade or alter a weapon’s combat state. The current CS2 inventory interface determines which operations are available for a specific item at that moment.
Acquisition and trade restrictions
Name Tags can be acquired through supported in-game offers or the Steam Community Market. The displayed price and availability depend on the current offer and market listing. Because a Name Tag is consumed when applied, players should distinguish buying the tag from buying a weapon that already has a custom name. A renamed weapon can retain its name through a later transfer.
A November 12, 2025 CS2 update changed the transfer status of newly purchased Name Tags and StatTrak Swap Tools: those newly purchased tool items could no longer be traded or listed on the Community Market. This restriction concerns the Name Tag item itself after purchase. It does not mean that a weapon already carrying a custom name loses the name when that weapon is traded.
Market, account and item restrictions can change by update or purchase context. Before planning to transfer a tool item, check its current inventory status and applicable Steam item restrictions. Item Updates records the dated rule change, while Inventory explains the item storage and transfer context.
CS2 applicability
Name Tags originated in an earlier Counter-Strike item system, but this entry describes their Counter-Strike 2 use and the dated 2025 CS2 restriction. Older-game descriptions can document the item’s introduction history; they should not be used to assume every historic interface detail or market rule is still current.
The Name Tag is cosmetic. It does not improve damage, accuracy, recoil, ammunition, movement or matchmaking. It can make an owned weapon easier for its owner to recognize or give it a personalized label, but it does not affect what the weapon does in a round. For the broader cosmetic item system, see Weapon Skins, Inventory and Loadout.
Name Tag positions for knife models (September 13, 2023)
Name Tag positions were added for all knife models. The patch gives no coordinates, typography or model-specific layout and does not say every knife displays a label identically. This is a customization presentation change, not a combat-behavior adjustment.
Shadow Daggers Name Tag position (September 15, 2023)
The update adjusted the Name Tag location for Shadow Daggers. This is a model-specific placement correction following the September 13 update, which added Name Tag positions for all knife models. The September 15 note does not provide coordinates or describe any change to the knife model, animation or combat behavior. It records a refinement to the displayed customization label only.
Name Tagged C4 and Loadout eligibility (September 8, 2023)
The September 8 update made C4 items carrying a Name Tag eligible for a dedicated C4 Loadout slot. The change links the customization system to equipment selection; it does not describe how the label is displayed in a round or change the bomb objective. See C4 Explosive for the objective item and Loadout for selecting equipment.
