Animgraph 2 in the animgraph_2_beta build
The April 1, 2026 update introduced Animgraph 2 in the specifically named animgraph_2_beta build. It replaced the previous CS2 animation system in that beta build and was described as reducing the CPU and networking costs associated with animation. This is a dated beta record: it does not by itself establish that the same change had reached every retail CS2 installation on that date.
The update re-authored all third-person animations and adjusted several after player feedback. It also smoothed in-air crouching transitions in first- and third-person views. The release notes describe presentation and transition changes; they do not claim that every animation was redesigned or that the update changed weapon damage, movement speed or hit registration.
Animgraph 2 also accompanied refactored player-height logic on sloped surfaces. Player height on ramps was made consistent regardless of the direction of approach. Because grenade lineups on slopes may consequently differ, players testing the beta should re-check the position and trajectory they use rather than assume an older lineup is unchanged. See Movement Inaccuracy and Grenade Throws for the related movement and utility context.
The same beta update moved CS2 to a newer Source 2 revision and adjusted player occlusion using a GPU query. That visibility check was intended to prevent players from clipping through thin walls when none of their bounding volume was visible. Those engine and visibility changes are part of the dated beta package, not separate claims about every map or every later retail build. The update also added GetRoundRemainingTime to CS Script.
Retail release on April 20, 2026
The April 20, 2026 CS2 update states that all changes from the animgraph_2_beta build are now live. This marks the transition from the opt-in Beta status recorded on April 1 to retail availability. The April 1 movement, animation and audio notes describe the earlier beta build; this later date is the release boundary for those changes.
Beta animation revisions on April 14 and 17, 2026
The April 14, 2026 animgraph_2_beta update corrected several visible animation problems: a wrong pose when backing into corners, stuttering in third-person aim, missing knife-draw animations, and pose issues for pistols in the main menu. It also fixed visible pops when switching weapons while running or after throwing a grenade, a head-wobble issue during C4 planting, and an inspect-and-switch interaction. These notes describe animation presentation and transitions; they do not state that the fixes changed firing accuracy or weapon damage.
On April 17, Valve adjusted idle foot inverse-kinematics behavior, polished turn animations while planting, adjusted viewmodel animations, fixed fast weapon switching while inspect was held, and changed the head-dip amount in the counter-strafe animation. The HE Grenade throw correction applied to both its viewmodel and worldmodel. These dated beta changes became part of the live release on April 20, 2026; see Counter-Strike 2 for that version transition.
Viewmodel polish and defuse knife poses (April 28, 2026)
The April 28, 2026 AnimGraph 2 update made minor viewmodel-animation adjustments and corrected how Talon Knife and Karambit models are held during a defuse. The knife correction concerns first-person weapon presentation while the player performs the defuse action; the patch does not change defuse timing, kit use, knife damage or either knife’s combat statistics.
The general animation polish is not item-specific, while the named knife fix is. AnimGraph 2 describes the animation system update; individual entries retain the cosmetic identity and dated pose correction for Talon Knife and Karambit.
Network bandwidth adjustment (April 9, 2026 Beta)
The April 9, 2026 patch page lists one change for the animgraph_2_beta build: reduced network bandwidth utilization. The change is explicitly associated with that beta build, which players had to opt into through Steam’s beta settings; it should not be presented as a feature that automatically applied to every live CS2 client on that date. The note does not quantify the reduction or identify which animation updates, messages, or network conditions account for it.
Bandwidth utilization describes how much network data a system uses over time. The release note records an optimization target, not a change to hit registration, tick behavior, animation quality or match rules. Because no measurement or implementation detail is supplied, the entry preserves the narrow beta-specific statement.
First-person viewmodel lag fix (August 1, 2025)
The August 1, 2025 CS2 gameplay notes fixed a bug that prevented first-person viewmodel lag. This concerns the visual lag response of the held weapon or grenade model, not network latency, player movement speed or the time required to throw a grenade. The same update separately fixed inspecting a grenade after it had been primed, so the two changes should be read as distinct first-person presentation and action-state corrections.
