Distance & damage
A bullet can deal less damage at a longer distance than it does nearby. The size of this reduction depends on the weapon’s range modifier and other damage rules. Damage Falloff is separate from accuracy: spread or movement can cause a shot to miss, while falloff changes damage when a hit connects.
A target’s armor and the body region hit also affect the final health loss. Armor Penetration describes how the weapon interacts with Kevlar and helmets, while the weapon’s base damage provides another input. These factors must be considered together; falloff alone does not tell the player how many shots will eliminate a target.
Weapon differences
Pistols, SMGs, rifles and sniper rifles have different damage and range characteristics. A weapon that is effective in a close encounter may lose damage or practical effectiveness across a long sightline. Scoped weapons can help a player aim at range, but magnification does not remove distance-based damage rules.
Use the weapon’s intended role and compare its relevant stats. An AK-47, M4A4, Glock-18 and AWP should not be assumed to share one falloff curve. Exact range modifiers are weapon-specific and may change with CS2 balance updates.
Applying range information
If a player is taking repeated hits without eliminating an opponent, distance may be one reason, alongside armor, hit location, missed shots or weapon choice. Move closer only when the route is safe; otherwise use cover, utility or a teammate to create a better engagement.
Spread and Movement Inaccuracy influence whether shots connect, and Wall Penetration concerns surfaces between shooter and target. These are separate mechanics even though each can affect the result of a firefight.
CS2 applicability
This entry describes CS2 damage falloff without assigning a universal value. Weapon-specific range modifiers should be listed with their firearm and applicable update; values from earlier editions are not treated as current.
RangeModifier and the distance model
The Wiki describes distance-based damage reduction through the weapon’s RangeModifier. Its general model is base damage multiplied by the RangeModifier raised to the distance in game units divided by 500. In plain terms, the modifier is applied repeatedly as the bullet travels through each 500-unit interval: a lower modifier reduces damage faster, while a value nearer to 1 retains more of the starting damage. This model explains why two weapons with equal base damage can produce different damage at the same range.
The model is not the final health-damage result by itself. Hitbox multipliers, armor interaction, bullet travel through a surface, rounding and weapon-specific behavior can change what the target loses. A RangeModifier also does not describe the maximum distance the bullet can travel; bullet range is a separate limit, after which the shot disappears. Keep Armor Penetration and Wall Penetration separate when interpreting a hit.
Reading weapon values without mixing versions
Compare RangeModifier only within a clearly labeled weapon record and game version. The Wiki’s general table includes Global Offensive-specific values and older-game examples; those are not automatically CS2 values. This page therefore explains the mechanic without copying an edition-ambiguous percentage. Use a weapon article’s CS2-labeled value where one is available, and check its update history when a balance change modifies damage or falloff.
A distant hit that deals less damage is different from a miss. Spread, Movement Inaccuracy and Recoil affect where shots land; Damage Falloff affects damage after a hit connects. For a practical comparison, consult the CS2 pages for AK-47, M4A4, Glock-18 or AWP and compare their stated roles and weapon-specific information. Do not calculate a kill solely from the range modifier without accounting for armor and hit location.
