Group eligibility and profile selection

A player must belong to a Steam Community Group to use its tag. The selected group supplies the label, and the Clan Tag can be adjusted from the CS2 Player Profile. It is not a free-form text field for entering arbitrary wording, and it does not create or rename a Steam group.

The setting is a player-identity and social feature. It does not affect matchmaking, weapon choices, damage or round objectives. The visible group label is distinct from a player’s account username and from the Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist faction names used in a match.

September 2026 display changes

The September 22, 2026 update added the ability to select a Clan Tag from the Player Profile. A September 23 follow-up added tags to death notices. The dated sequence separates the profile control from the later match-display change.

Clan Tags can appear beside a player’s name in supported contexts. Their display is subject to server settings, so a profile selection does not guarantee that every community server will show the tag.

Custom-server control and CS2 scope

The September 25, 2026 CS2 update added the `sv_clantags_enabled` option so custom servers can disable Clan Tags. Server configuration therefore determines whether tags are shown in that environment, even when a player selected a Steam Group in the profile.

This article covers the CS2 feature restored in September 2026. It does not import legacy menu paths from earlier Counter-Strike games, nor does it treat a Clan Tag as a gameplay modifier. For related player-interface context, see Profile, HUD and Communication.
