September 27, 2023 Counter-Strike 2 launch update

Counter-Strike 2 added demo playback support with its September 27, 2023 release. A demo lets a player review a recorded match after play, making it possible to revisit rounds, positioning and event sequences rather than relying only on memory or the live scoreboard. Playback is a review tool and does not change the original match result.

The launch note establishes support but does not specify which queues provide downloadable recordings, how long they remain available, file locations or playback controls. Those details can depend on the current client and update. Do not assume that an older demo is compatible with every later CS2 build. See CSTV for server-side spectator and recording context.

Spectator camera transitions (July 17, 2023)

The July 17, 2023 Limited Test update fixed a camera interpolation case when switching between chase and roaming spectator views. It also fixed the player’s viewmodel weapon disappearing for one frame when switching in-eye spectator targets. These notes cover presentation while spectating; they do not change player movement, weapon availability or the recorded demo itself.

Demo frame screenshot memory fix (April 22, 2024)

An undocumented Counter-Strike 2 change dated April 22, 2024 fixed a bug where viewing a demo saved a screenshot of each frame in the computer’s memory. The note identifies the affected activity—watching a demo—and the per-frame screenshot behavior, but does not state how long the memory was retained, how much space was involved or whether the issue affected exported screenshots. It is recorded as a demo-viewing memory fix, not as a change to demo recording or screenshot capture features.

Camera movement while playback is paused (April 25, 2024)

Before the April 25, 2024 update, demo-camera movement was coupled to playback speed. The change decoupled camera movement from that speed, allowing an observer to move the camera even while demo playback is paused. This makes it possible to inspect a moment from a different viewpoint without advancing the recorded round. It affects replay navigation and observation, not the original match simulation or a player's live camera controls.

Faster forward skipping in demos (April 30, 2024)

The April 30, 2024 update corrected demo playback processing too many user commands when skipping forward. Valve stated that the change reduced skip time by as much as 80%. This is a maximum reported improvement to the time taken for the affected forward-skip operation; it does not mean that every seek is exactly 80% faster, nor that the recorded match itself plays at a different pace.

Forward skipping is used to move through a recorded match more quickly to reach a later moment. The fix concerns the playback client's processing during that navigation. The patch does not give a skip duration, hardware requirement or command setting, so none is implied here. Normal playback, pause controls and camera movement are separate functions of Demo Playback.

Pause at the end of a recording (May 1, 2024)

From the May 1, 2024 update onward, demo playback pauses when it reaches the end of a recording instead of returning to the main menu. This leaves the completed replay in its end state so the viewer can remain with the recording rather than being sent away automatically. The patch does not say that the demo file is rewritten, extended or resumed from a new position.

The same release lists minor demo playback optimizations but gives no technical details or measured speed improvement for them. Keep that broad optimization separate from the specific end-of-recording pause behavior. The update changes how the replay session concludes; it does not affect the original match result or the recording's contents.

HUD position after demos (May 9, 2024)

The May 9, 2024 update fixed a HUD offset that could occur after watching a demo. The release note does not describe a demo-control or playback-layout change. This is a live-interface positioning issue associated with the post-demo state, separate from demo camera movement and playback speed.

Demo pause exploit fix (May 9, 2024 night update)

A separate May 9, 2024 night build is associated with a fix for a demo_pause exploit. Unlike the daytime May 9 release, this build has no official patch notes; the short change description identifies only the exploit name and its removal. It does not explain how the exploit worked, who could trigger it, whether it affected live matches or how the correction changed demo controls.

The name links the reported fix to demo pausing, but the available note is not detailed enough to describe a reproduction or impact. This should be treated as an undocumented, build-specific security/behavior correction, not as a change to ordinary pause or playback navigation. The daytime May 9 fixes remain a separate update record.
