The narrator recalls how crushing taxes drove the Flemish to oppose their nobles, who answered with threats of confiscation and burial outside consecrated ground.

When rebellion broke out, the nobles called on their French allies, and a full army of mercenaries, trained soldiers and knights marched on Cassel against peasant and burgher rebels.

Thousands died or were left maimed in the battle, and the victors then burned the entire city; the writer still hears the screams and smells the smoke — but vows the survivors will recover and one day have their justice.
