Dream Stealers

On certain nights, as the world falls into profound stillness, when even the dogs stop barking, the red moths come. They slip through cracks and creep up windowpanes, tapping like rude visitors clamouring to be let in — some say from a faraway land where monsters gnaw each other in the dark, eternally hungering for blood's sweetness.

Light as wisps, they climb over sleepers and settle onto closed eyes to feed, robbing every bright dream and thought and filling the emptiness with nightmares carried from their home. Anyone who fails to wake before they finish loses every last good dream and never tastes peaceful sleep again.

Those who fear them leave little saucers of honey on the sill as a sweeter lure, but the moths inevitably come back, tapping and creeping, hunger unabated.
