Edug and Elil

This age-old tale tells how Sheema lost her heart to Edru, a champion who shielded his people from the vrakhiri, and carried him off to the Underworld to keep him by her side. His sons Edug and Elil refused to accept it and journeyed to the Underworld to bring their father back, facing many foes — and Andag the war-god, first mistaken by them for a mountain, which amused him into promising his aid.

United, they hunted Sheema to her palace among the dead and demanded Edru's return, not knowing that whoever descends to the Underworld is barred from returning. Admiring their courage and perseverance, the goddess bent the rule: she would not release Edru, but the brothers could return — no more in mortal form, but as the sun and moon, the golden and silver discs, watching over their tribe and protecting it for all eternity.
