Hollow-Hearts
This eerie tale begins at dusk, as crimson moths fill the air and cling to doors and windows. In the night something comes unseen and unheard — and by morning the villagers' chests are void, their hearts gone.
The heartless search the wells, the fields and the hollows of trees in vain. Without their hearts their laughter fades, their sorrow dulls, their anger cools, until they feel nothing at all and forget what it was to be human.
Unable to live among their own, they scatter into forests and caves, lurking in fog and laying traps. They still wander, the tale warns, lying in wait, silent and grinning, for any who wander too far from the firelight — for should they find you, they will attempt to rip your heart out, hoping it might fill the hollow where theirs once beat. It never works, and it never will.
