How to Run a Prosperous Manor – An Overseer's Guide
This earmarked, greasy handbook offers an overseer's advice on manor management. Its author holds peasants to be lazy and insidious by nature, requiring constant discipline — administered not only after their crimes but before them, so they always remember the punishment for misbehaviour.
At the same time the peasants must be kept in relatively good shape, or they lose the strength to work — so the author advises moderation: a few lashes a day, or a sound weekly beating best scheduled before mass, so the precautionary beating is at once followed by confession and penance.
