How Uktash Met Nassur

How Uktash Met Nassur

This tale, said to be among the final surviving copies, tells of the dying King of Urduk, who had three brave sons all fit to be his heir. He ordered all three into the world to be tested by fate: the two elder sons went west to great cities and adventures, while the youngest, Uktash, travelled east into a scorched and lifeless land, to his brothers' laughter.

In the scorched land, sheer luck saved Uktash from certain death more than once, until he met Nassur, the silver serpent-god. Asked whether he did not fear it, Uktash admitted he did, but said he had never beheld anything lovelier than its silver skin, and had set his fear aside. Unimpressed, Nassur devoured him, glided down into the rocks, and there shed its silver skin.

Years later, Uktash's brothers — one now King of Urduk — travelled east searching for him. They never found Uktash, but struck a rich seam of silver that had once been Nassur's skin; mining it made Urduk richer still, and safer from the vrakhiri.
