On Alchemy and Alchemists
This text pushes back against the idea that faith and alchemy conflict, observing that many famed alchemists
were clergy — citing Albertus Magnus the Dominican and Roger Bacon the Franciscan,
reputed builder of a brass head that could speak. It warns, however, that charlatans also cloak themselves in the art,
making true scholars hard to tell from frauds. As illustration it recounts the misfortunes of Arnaldus de Villanova,
physician to the Aragon kings: imprisoned for heresy, freed by a pope he had cured, then imprisoned again
by another pope with his works ordered burned — leaving the reader to judge what to make of him.
