Sanctum Praeputium, or the Holy Foreskin

Of all relics a Christian might venerate, this text argues, the Holy Prepuce is the most mysterious of all.

It recounts how, days after Jesus's birth and circumcision, an old woman placed the foreskin into an alabaster box;

how it crossed the world over centuries before being given to Pope Leo III; how Saint Bridget received a vision

confirmed its authenticity; and how the pope set it into a golden cross, within a casket, within a cypress chest,

beneath the altar of the Chapel of Saint Lawrence in Rome, where it remains. Doubts persist, however:

King Baldwin of Jerusalem gained a similar relic on crusade, carried to the Abbey of Charroux,

where the bishop of Cambrai witnessed it bleed — a miracle that convinced him it was the true one.
