Last Words of a Plague Victim
Presented as the last words of a plague victim, this letter wishes the writer could speak to his Mialle
instead of scribbling on damp pages — all he has left, and all he will ever have.
He wonders how long the plague will take him, days or hours, and doubts he will recover,
breathing itself becoming a chore. His hope is only that his family be spared: he left at the first sign
of illness and will die alone praising God, if God spares them. In his final lines he wonders whether
the taken are the lucky ones, and commits his wife and girls into God's hands.
