Long ago a cruel lord's wife, finding gentleness in her white mare that the world denied her, fled her husband's murderous hand one night.
The lord's crossbow bolt pierced the mare's heart, yet bleeding and undaunted she bore her mistress beyond his grasp, refusing death until her mistress was safe, and only then collapsed.
The lady lived out her days in peace but never forgot her truest friend; when she died beneath a brighter moon, the mare's ghost waited to ride with her again.
Ever since, on moonlit nights the pair gallop through the woods, calling to women and girls in cruel hands to run with them into the moonlight and vanish, leaving only fading hoofbeats.
