In Zerau hamlet, burials began opening at night; the hired watchman vanished by dawn and a priest's exorcism changed nothing.
At last the whole hamlet stood watch and beheld a hound huge as a horse, black as Hell's pits, digging up coffins and gorging on decayed flesh and ancient bones.
Though more numerous than the beast, no one dared raise a blade; they fled to save themselves, in vain, and not one of those cowardly souls has rested since.
