The Song of Roland

The brave knight Roland, Charlemagne's loyal vassal, battled the Saracens across Spain until, after seven wearying years, both sides sought peace.

Roland's stepfather Ganelon, sent to negotiate, feared Roland meant him dead and betrayed the Franks to the enemy.

Using Ganelon's knowledge, the Saracens ambushed Roland's rearguard in a mountain pass, opening the battle of Roncevaux.

Outnumbered, Roland battled with a lion's fury and, too proud to call for aid, sounded his horn only when survival was already hopeless; Charlemagne arrived to crush the Saracens, angels bore Roland's soul to Heaven, and Ganelon was executed as a traitor.

The moral: a noble death outvalues a traitor's life in God's sight.
