Role in Hostage Rescue
In Counter-Strike 2 Hostage Rescue, a Counter-Terrorist approaches a hostage and uses the interaction to pick it up, then carries it to the marked rescue area. Reaching the hostage is only the start of the objective; the team must complete the escort. The carrier moves more slowly, so teammates may need to clear or cover the route while Terrorists try to stop the rescue. The mode requires one successful hostage extraction for an objective win. See Hostage Rescue for the full round rules and team decisions.
Hostages are objective entities rather than player-controlled characters or equipment. Their presence changes where teams contest space: Counter-Terrorists must protect the pickup and escort, while Terrorists can defend the hostage area or pressure the carrier’s route. Match rules and map placement are separate: consult the applicable CS2 map and mode record rather than assuming every Hostage Rescue map uses identical geometry.
The CS2 format uses two hostages, but the Counter-Terrorist team needs to extract only one to win through the objective. A rescue is not the only route to victory: the normal elimination and round-timer conditions still apply. These rules distinguish the CS2 format from older editions that required a different share of the hostages; do not import those older win conditions into a CS2 match.
Hostages are protected from ordinary weapon damage in the CS2 rules, but shooting one can still trigger a cash penalty. Counter-Terrorists also receive a small reward when starting the rescue interaction and a larger reward for completing an extraction, paid to the carrier. These interactions connect the hostage object to weapon discipline and the team economy, while the dated Limited Test updates below cover separate model and presentation changes.
Rescue prediction and carried shadows
The August 31, 2023 Limited Test patch fixed a case involving hostage-rescue prediction and enabled a first-person shadow for carried hostages. The first change concerns prediction of the rescue interaction; the second makes the hostage’s carried state visible through a local shadow cue. The note does not specify the prediction bug’s exact trigger or define the shadow’s visibility to other players.
Hostages are the objective entities in Hostage Rescue: Counter-Terrorists escort them to a rescue zone while Terrorists try to prevent the rescue. The patch changes presentation and prediction around that objective, not the number of hostages, rescue-zone rules or round win condition. See Hostage Rescue and Counter-Terrorists.
Hostage model update
The August 15, 2023 Limited Test update changed the hostage models. The patch does not describe the model revisions or specify whether the changes affected every map, animation or hostage state. It is a dated presentation update; the later August 31 patch separately fixed rescue prediction and enabled a first-person shadow for carried hostages. See Hostage Rescue.
Additional hostage variants
The August 16, 2023 Limited Test update added more hostage variants. It does not specify how many variants were added or name their models. This followed the previous day’s hostage-model update and preceded the August 31 fix to rescue prediction and first-person carried-hostage shadows. These are separate dated presentation changes; none alters hostage movement or the rescue objective. See Hostage Rescue.
