Objective and win conditions
The two teams have different priorities. Counter-Terrorists win by carrying either hostage to a rescue zone or by eliminating every Terrorist before the round timer ends. Terrorists win by eliminating all Counter-Terrorists or surviving until time expires without allowing a rescue. Unlike older versions of the mode, CS2 does not require the CT team to rescue half of the initial hostages: one successful extraction is sufficient.
This objective creates a clear attacker-and-defender relationship within the round. Counter-Terrorists must reach a hostage, secure the pickup and escort its carrier through an exposed route. Terrorists can contest the hostage location, deny the route or eliminate the rescuers. The elimination condition means that both teams must still manage ordinary weapon engagements even while the hostage objective is active.
Picking up and rescuing a hostage
Hostages are generally positioned near the Terrorist starting side, and the rescue zone is usually nearer Counter-Terrorist spawn. A CT approaches a hostage and uses the interaction key to pick it up. The carrier then moves with the hostage to the marked rescue area; merely reaching or touching the hostage does not complete the rescue.
Carrying a hostage significantly slows the Counter-Terrorist. This makes the carrier easier to predict and puts greater importance on the teammates who can clear the route, hold likely interception points and protect crossings. A team can concentrate on one hostage because it needs only one successful delivery. Splitting attention between both can leave the slower carrier without cover. For Terrorists, the pickup sound and likely path can help identify where to apply pressure.
A hostage extraction also affects round timing. In the CS2 implementation described by the game’s shared rules, carrying a hostage adds time to the clock to compensate for the slower escort. Exact match timers can depend on the ruleset, so this entry does not treat an older edition’s base timer as a universal CS2 value.
Damage penalties and economy
Hostages are protected from ordinary weapon damage in the CS2 rules, but shooting one still brings a cash penalty. The penalty discourages careless fire around the objective even though the hostage cannot be killed through that damage. The mode’s objective therefore interacts with weapon discipline as well as positioning: firing through or toward a hostage can cost money without advancing the round.
Counter-Terrorists receive a small cash reward when they begin a hostage interaction and a larger reward for successfully delivering a hostage to the exit. The larger payment goes to the individual carrier, connecting objective execution with the next round’s Economy. These rewards supplement the mode’s normal team and round income; they do not change the buy menu or provide a special weapon.
Maps and CS2 availability
Italy and Office are the official CS2 maps associated with Hostage Rescue. Both use the same core two-hostage objective, but their different layouts create distinct routes between the hostage areas and rescue locations. Map selection and map-pool availability are separate facts: a map can support this mode without being part of every active competitive rotation. Consult each map’s own page for its CS2 history and current playlist context.
Hostage Rescue is available through the CS2 Casual and Competitive rulesets. The ruleset changes how a match is organized, but the central hostage interaction remains recognizable: CTs collect and extract one hostage, Ts try to stop the rescue, and either team can win by eliminating its opponents. Maps indexes the relevant map entries.
Teamplay and equipment
For Counter-Terrorists, decide which hostage and exit offer the safest achievable route. Teammates can move ahead to clear angles, cover the carrier as the team crosses an exposed lane, or delay defenders while the escort advances. The carrier’s reduced speed makes unsupported movement risky, so the group benefits from communicating which route it is using. Smoke can obscure a dangerous sightline, while a flashbang can help teammates challenge a defender holding the pickup area; these tools support the normal team plan rather than changing the hostage rules.
Terrorists can defend the pickup area or intercept the carrier between that area and the rescue zone. Watching the route and responding quickly after a pickup can force the CT team to fight while moving slowly. If defenders are outnumbered or cut off, the elimination condition may still matter more than an attempt to contest a rescue that is already close to completion. The Counter-Terrorists and Terrorists pages describe the team roles; the Smoke Grenade entry explains the utility item.
Version notes
CS2 carries forward the Global Offensive-style hostage format: two hostages, pickup and carry, and a rescue of either one for an objective win. The Riot Shield that appeared in an earlier Global Offensive update is not available in CS2 Hostage Rescue. Earlier series entries had different hostage counts, win conditions, movement behavior and map catalogues; those details should not be used as CS2 rules.
Hostage Rescue is a team objective, not a separate character class. CT agent selection, weapons, armor, grenades and match economy continue to use their ordinary CS2 systems. Read this page with the mode-specific map entries rather than treating every map historically labelled “hostage rescue” as available in the current game.
Hostage objective updates
The August 31, 2023 Limited Test patch corrected a hostage-rescue prediction issue and enabled a first-person shadow for a carried hostage. These updates relate to how the rescue action is represented and how the carried objective appears to its carrier; the patch does not describe a change to the rescue-zone objective itself.
The hostage-rescue mode still centers on the Counter-Terrorists escorting hostages to safety while the Terrorists contest that route. See Hostage for the objective entity and its dated CS2 presentation changes.
Hostage model variants
The August 16, 2023 CS2 Limited Test added more hostage variants, following an August 15 update to hostage models. The patch note does not enumerate the variants or map their availability. On August 31, a separate update addressed hostage-rescue prediction and the first-person shadow for carried hostages. These dated presentation changes are distinct from the objective’s rescue-zone rules. See Hostage.
