Matching a key to a weapon case
To open a locked weapon case, select it in the inventory and use the key specified for that case. A key is tied to a compatible container type; owning a key does not make it a universal opener for every CS2 container. Completing an opening consumes the case and key, and the case’s reward pool determines which eligible item is received. The key itself does not choose the reward, improve its rarity or guarantee a particular weapon finish.
Case and key are separate inventory items. The case contains its listed range of possible finishes and any special item group described for that container, while the key supplies access to the opening process. For case contents and how case series differ, see Weapon Cases. An item appearing in a case’s possible pool is not a promise that a specific opening will produce it.
Containers that do not require a Case Key
Not every CS2 container is a locked weapon case. Some sticker capsules and tournament Souvenir packages can be opened without buying or supplying a case key. Check the specific item’s opening flow and item description: a key requirement belongs to a container’s rules, not to every item whose name includes “case,” “capsule” or “package.” This distinction is useful when planning an inventory purchase because the container type determines whether another item is required.
Purchased-key trade and market restriction
An October 29, 2019 restriction changed the transfer behavior of newly purchased keys. Keys purchased from that date onward cannot be traded or sold on the Steam Community Market and must be used to open an eligible case on the purchasing account. This rule concerns the purchased key, not the case’s reward pool or the tradability of every item found inside a case.
Keys acquired before the change may have different transfer status, so a historic key should not be assumed to follow the newer purchase restriction—or assumed to be transferable—without checking its own inventory properties. The item’s displayed trade and market status is the practical guide for a particular key. A key locked to its purchaser can still perform its opening function; the restriction limits transfer rather than disabling the item.
Relationship to the CS2 inventory
Case Keys are consumed in the container-opening action and do not become a lasting weapon, sticker or currency balance. They are separate from the weapon finishes grouped in Collections and from inventory-management features such as StatTrak™ Swap Tool. A case opening changes which cosmetic item the player owns; it does not change a weapon’s combat statistics.
This entry covers compatible locked cases in Counter-Strike 2 and the purchase restriction that began on October 29, 2019. It excludes edition-specific key catalogues and case lists from other Counter-Strike releases. Current eligibility and transfer status should be checked on the individual CS2 items, since older keys and newer purchases may have different properties.
Matching a key to a container
A Case Key is an inventory item used to unlock a compatible locked weapon case or other keyed container in Counter-Strike 2. The container determines the possible cosmetic rewards; the key does not select a particular weapon finish. Before opening, check the container name and its listed contents so the choice is deliberate. Once opened, the item is selected from that container’s reward pool, with rarer grades represented as less common outcomes. The key and the case are separate inventory items, and a key for one case family does not function as a universal opener.
CS2 containers can include weapon cases and other item containers such as sticker capsules. Not every container uses the same key rule: some newer capsules or store items may open without a separate key. Read the item’s in-game description rather than assuming that any capsule needs a matching key. The Weapon Cases article explains how a case groups weapon finishes, while Collections explains the relationship between skins in a reward pool.
Purchasing and dated key restrictions
The Counter-Strike Wiki records that keys purchased after the October 29, 2019 Key Change became non-tradable and non-marketable, and must be used to open a case on the purchasing account. This is a dated rule about newly purchased keys, not a blanket description of every older key item. Earlier keys could have different transfer status, so an older inventory item should be checked individually rather than inferred from its name.
A key unlocks the container; it does not guarantee a particular grade, finish, pattern or StatTrak™ version. Opening is separate from buying or receiving a finished item. Players can instead obtain eligible finishes through inventory trading or a Trade Up Contract, subject to those systems’ own requirements. The Inventory page explains where keys and containers are stored and used. Historical key associations in a gallery describe which container a key was designed for and should not be treated as evidence that the container is currently obtainable.
