Access and purpose
The Limited Test began on March 22, 2023 alongside the public announcement of CS2. Access was closed rather than an open download: selected players saw an invitation in the Global Offensive main menu. Selection considered factors such as recent play on Valve official servers, Trust Factor and Steam account standing. These were invitation criteria for a historical test, not current account requirements for playing Counter-Strike 2.
On August 31, 2023, invitations expanded to as many eligible players as possible. The eligibility snapshot included CS:GO Prime Status, an active official Competitive Skill Group and primary play in official matchmaking in supported regions. Because this describes a 2023 test window, it should not be reused as a current Prime, ranked or CS2 access policy.
The test gave developers a live environment in which to validate game systems and deploy changes in stages. Players could compare familiar map layouts and weapon behaviors with the new engine, while feedback and observed issues informed later test updates. It was not a separate expansion, a permanent CS2 mode or a public-server branch that remained active after release.
Maps and modes changed during testing
The test’s content arrived in waves. Dust II was available at the start; Mirage was added June 6, 2023. June 29 added Casual and brought Nuke and Office into selected mode rotations. July 17 added Overpass and Vertigo and introduced Unranked Wingman. Ancient and Anubis followed on August 2, while Premier arrived August 31 alongside Inferno. Hostage Rescue maps Office and Italy were also included during later stages. These dates show the pace of the test, but they do not mean every listed map was simultaneously active in every mode.
The Limited Test ultimately included five ways to play: Unranked Competitive, Deathmatch, Casual, Unranked Wingman and Premier. Casual and Wingman were added after the initial test began, and Premier appeared shortly before retail release. This progression is why a mode article should distinguish a CS2 test debut from the mode’s later retail status. The Premier, Competitive, Wingman, Deathmatch and Casual pages describe the modes separately.
Maps were released at intervals and used on official servers to gather feedback on shortcomings. Once the development team considered a map sufficiently improved, it could be replaced by another test map. Temporary test rotation therefore differs from the later CS2 matchmaking pool. Consult Map Rotations for retail availability and the Patch Archive for dated build entries.
Systems tested before public release
The Limited Test progressively exposed gameplay, interface and creation systems. Updates introduced revised maps and the changed weapon loadout approach, along with Source 2 authoring tools that let creators develop and submit custom maps, weapon finishes and stickers. A feature that appeared in a test update may have been adjusted before September 27, so test screenshots and guides need their date and build context.
Weapons used in Competitive and Deathmatch were carried into CS2 with more detailed models, and cosmetic inventory items such as finishes, stickers and knives transferred to the new game. At the start of the new game, many finishes still used older weapon models while the game’s presentation and maps changed. Item transfer concerns the player’s inventory and supported CS2 content; it does not mean every historic item or operation feature was preserved unchanged.
The test also used two default factions across maps rather than assigning a map-specific faction lineup: SAS for Counter-Terrorists and Phoenix Connexion for Terrorists. Players could use eligible Agents to replace those default models. This was a test-era presentation detail, while CS2 agent selection and faction entries belong to their own pages.
End of the Limited Test
Counter-Strike 2 released publicly on September 27, 2023, ending the Limited Test period. The retail game replaced Global Offensive on Steam. Some systems and content from the test continued into release, some changed, and some did not become part of the public game. Current CS2 rules should be read from the relevant live system article and later patch history rather than inferred from a test build.
The transition also created a clear edition boundary. The Limited Test was a pre-release CS2 build distributed through invitations; the public release is the continuing Counter-Strike 2 product. Global Offensive’s legacy branch is a separate version context, not a continuation of the CS2 Limited Test. Use Counter-Strike 2 for the retail game and its Gameplay Updates for later changes.
This entry covers the CS2 Limited Test from March 22 through September 27, 2023. It excludes the original Counter-Strike Beta, Global Offensive betas and post-release content except where needed to mark the end of the test. Test-only access rules and map rotations are historical facts, not present-day instructions.
