The valley's dogs are a mixed lot: some are strays — starving, rabid, at times both — while others were raised by the knyaz's huntsmen, deliberately kept hungry to hone their hunting drive and bloodlust. Soldiers bring them on patrols, above all beyond Svartrau, where dogs' swiftness, agility and sharp noses get the better of ordinary bandits and manumits.
