At a glance you might take it for a large wolf — until the wrongness creeps in: fangs too long, eyes aglow, a gait no natural beast should have. Then the howling starts, low and rolling, knelling a promise of death in your ears. Did nature make such a horror? I doubt it. Then how was it spawned — to some purpose, or merely an accident — some wolf or dog that wandered too close to some dark, accursed place?
