To look at Greifberg Castle, one might assume it has crowned Svartrau for centuries. In truth it was raised a mere thirteen years ago. Earlier, a far humbler stronghold occupied the site — largely timber, with merely a few key sections built in stone.
Knyaz Skender, so Coen heard, had dreamed of a fitting castle for years and broke ground soon after seizing power. Then, in AD 1333, following the notorious Shrike's Crag massacre, he drove the work harder still — perhaps dreading a fresh rebel assault. They never did, and three years later the fortress stood complete.
Skender boasted that its mighty walls would hold every enemy at bay… Yet they barely slowed Brencis. He claimed the castle together with its dungeons — where he now holds Coen's family prisoner.
