Overview
Mert works as a miller and is the cousin of Coen's friend Vlad. Coen barely knows him, but he appears to be mixed up with the manumits as well — perhaps he could help arrange contact with them.
The trouble is speed: Brencis's soldiers have arrested Mert, and he now languishes in a stronghold of the soldiers.
