From Life of St. Gregory
Commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, he was born to Rome's aristocracy. When his father died he made the family villa a monastery, devoting long years to prayer and contemplation.
That life ended when Pelagius II named him apocrisiarius; in 590 Gregory succeeded Pelagius, becoming the 64th Bishop of Rome.
