Greifberg, or the Finest Fortress of the Carpathians

Written under the old knyaz's patronage, this piece marvels at Greifberg looming over Svartrau: visitors gape in disbelief, whispering how anyone could raise such a tremendous castle at such dizzying height above the precipice — and at what cost.

The cost was many lives. Some were accidents: dozens of labourers plunged to their deaths, while dozens more besides were smashed by tumbling masonry. Others were punishments: architects lost their heads over slipped deadlines, carpenters were nailed living to their crooked scaffolds.

Such, the writer concludes, is the Dragosti way: once their minds are set, they accomplish it at any price, scorning all counsel, deaf to every warning. They rule Vale Sangora with an iron fist, and the foreboding castle among the clouds stands as an apt emblem of their indisputable dominance.
