On Pixie Dust

The author, a healer or alchemist, confesses that neither physic nor alchemy has yielded a plague cure

and that desperation has driven him to a new idea. Legends tell of the sanzhani — small flying creatures,

called pixies by some, fond of children and fond of stealing teeth — near them, a day feels like an hour

and a year like a day. His plan: he cannot halt the plague, but by killing the creatures and grinding them

into an ingestible powder, he might make the infected experience days as a full lifetime.

Because pixies are visible only to children, he has enlisted orphans to catch them like butterflies.
