The battle took place on Saturday, 26 August 1346, nine years into the bloody Anglo-French war over the throne between France's Philip and England's Edward.
Edward's 15,000 Englishmen were outnumbered two to one but held high ground with time to prepare; their archers cut down 1,500 Genoese crossbowmen whose bowstrings the rain had ruined.
Enraged, Philip sent in his cavalry, whose charge killed the surviving Genoese, but the English line held and, contrary to custom, no captives were taken.
The French lost several thousand men to a few hundred English dead; the injured Philip escaped to La Broye with just five barons, giving the castellan only his name and title in answer.
The Anglo-French war, the account closes, still grinds on, seemingly without end.
