When Brencis first took power, he assembled the populace before Svartrau Cathedral to proclaim the Covenant of Blood: he would drink their blood and they his.
The frightened crowd was calmed by a sage called Leonard, who argued this was no different from the Eucharist, eating Christ's body and drinking His blood, and that earthly rule should mirror the Kingdom of God.
Persuaded, the crowd partook of the knyaz's blood, finding themselves healed of plague and all other illnesses.
Leonard was made one of Brencis's most trusted advisors the next day, rewarded for teaching that salvation through the knyaz begins with opening one's heart to his grace.
