A cold, rainy summer in AD 1315 ruined crops across Europe, with the next two years proving no kinder; prayers went unanswered.
Famine ravaged Christendom and many read it as the Apocalypse: people ate grass and carcasses, rumours spoke of cannibalism, parents killed babies they could not feed, sons abandoned ailing parents.
Many died and others never recovered; the desperate rebelled against lieges and even the church.
Then, abruptly as it had come, the famine lifted, but the author warns it was only the beginning of greater misfortunes.
