Wisdom of the Mire

The tale tells of a stranger said to dwell in a swamp burrow,

whom the kind compared to a lizard and others to a maggot or frog,

his hair matted with moss and his clothes rotted, though none had truly seen him.

He emerged only on the darkest, cloudiest nights to wander the mire

and trade his centuries-deep insight to any fool who came bearing gifts.

One night a young farmer, exiled with his family by a new lord, sought his help

and offered the sweetest gift of all — his own blood.

In return he gained cunning enough to make a fool of the new lord and take his place.

Though lesser in wisdom than the stranger, the farmer grasped two truths:

this was an ally worth keeping, and those in power never pay their tithes —

other people's blood tastes just as sweet. So they paid, and he ruled into old age.
