Yokel Utopia

The essay observes that peasants, naive as children, will credit the wildest tales —

among them a supposed land of plenty where sausages grow on trees,

roast geese drop from the sky, and wells brim with sweet milk.

The yokels swear on their forebears' graves that the place is real,

each knowing someone who knows someone who has seen it.

Elsewhere the neverland goes by Cockaigne or Cloud Cuckoo Land;

in Vale Sangora it is called the Eternal Pass, a land of endless spring and merriment.

The author offered a handsome sum to anyone who could lead him there —

and, as expected, found no takers.
