Overview

Gathering upgrades pay off when enough workers benefit and the match lasts long enough to recover their cost.

Plan and execution

Check worker assignments and favor a heavily used resource. Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart support Villager work rates, while Horse Collar, Heavy Plow, and Crop Rotation improve the Farm economy; verify availability before spending. Research at the appropriate building when the timing is safe, then rebalance workers.

Risks and adaptation

Buying every upgrade can leave a timing window uncovered. Compare cost with worker count, map safety, and the next transition.

Decision example

Before researching a gathering upgrade, ask how many workers will use it before the next military timing. A wood upgrade benefits a heavily occupied woodline, whereas a farming upgrade pays back across Farms that will be worked or reseeded long enough. Wheelbarrow occupies the Town Center, so compare its benefit with the Villagers that could be trained during research. When a raid is imminent, defend first and return to the upgrade after the economy is safe.
