Map character

Explore the starting island’s dry-land resources before investing in a Dock; each island can support an opening economy. Then scout both short naval Trade Routes and the safest crossing to the opposing island. The provided transport boat enables a small landing, but inspect the water for enemy ships before loading it.

What to scout

Delay a major naval investment if the island economy is stable and the crossing is contested. Use transports for a surprise or reinforcement only when the landing party can survive after arrival. Fishing becomes attractive once the sea can be held; otherwise concentrate on the island and secure a route station with the main army.

Two islands and a naval crossing

Teams start on opposite islands in the western Mediterranean. Two short naval Trade Routes connect them and can become an early point of conflict. Each island has enough dry-land resources for an opening economy, so an immediate water investment is optional; later, control of the sea determines who can move troops between islands safely. Each player also starts with a small transport boat, leaving room for surprise crossings.

Protect the crossing

Bourbon, Habsburg and Phanar settlements are available, with Highwayman and Inquisitor as outlaws. Scout island edges before splitting the army. A transport can move a small force, but it is vulnerable in contested water. Fishing and a Dock can help if the sea can be held; otherwise use the island’s land resources and contest the crossing when reinforcements can arrive. Definitive Edition classifies this Knights of the Mediterranean map as a water map.
